Halloween Gonks: Spooky Styles and How to Choose

Gonks are no longer just for Christmas. Here are the Halloween and autumn designs to look for, when they reach UK shops, how to display them and what to check before you buy.

In short

  • Halloween gonks swap red hats for witch hats, pumpkins, ghosts, bats and spiders in black, orange and purple.
  • Autumn or harvest gonks, in mustard, rust and sage, can stay out from September until it is time for Christmas.
  • Halloween ranges usually reach UK shops in late summer, and popular designs have sold out within days.
  • In October 2026 Primark recalled two Halloween gonks because the sand inside may contain asbestos, a reminder to check recall notices.
  • Outdoor Halloween gonks should be clearly labelled for outdoor use, especially if they light up.

What is a Halloween gonk?

A Halloween gonk keeps everything that makes a gonk recognisable, the long hat, the hidden eyes, the round nose and the beard, but dresses it up for spooky season. Instead of a Santa hat you'll find a pointed witch hat with a wide brim, a pumpkin-shaped body or a ghostly white sheet. They are spooky in the gentlest possible way, which is exactly why they are popular with families who prefer cute to creepy.

New to gonks? Start with what is a gonk?

  • Witch gonks with wide-brimmed black hats, often with striped tights and dangling legs. Some have plaits and broomsticks.
  • Pumpkin gonks, either sitting on a pumpkin, holding one, or with an orange pumpkin body.
  • Ghost gonks in white, sometimes glow-in-the-dark.
  • Bat, spider and skeleton gonks with embroidered details on the hat.
  • Light-up gonks with LED noses or hats, indoors and out.
  • Halloween gonk homeware: mugs, tealight holders, cushions and oil burners.

Autumn and harvest gonks

If you want something that lasts longer than one night, look for autumn gonks. They come in warm mustard, rust, burnt orange, brown and sage, often with knitted hats, leaves, acorns, toadstools or little pumpkins. You can put them out in September, add a witch or two at the end of October, then swap to Christmas gonks in December. See gonks for every season for a full year's plan.

When do Halloween gonks go on sale?

Halloween gonks tend to arrive in UK shops in late summer, from around August, alongside autumn decorations. Garden centres and homeware chains usually get them first, followed by supermarkets and discount shops in September and October.

They can go fast. In one widely reported example, a new Halloween gonk range from The Range sold out online within about two days of launch, although stores still had stock. If there is a design you love, it is worth buying when you see it rather than waiting for October.

Safety: check the recall notices

On 6 October 2026, Primark recalled two Halloween gonks, the Witch Mini and the Pumpkin, because the sand sealed inside them may contain a small amount of asbestos. The official notice tells owners to stop using them, keep them away from children, seal undamaged gonks in a heavy-duty plastic bag, and return them to any Primark store for a refund, with no receipt needed.

It is a good reminder that many sitting gonks are weighted with sand or pellets, and that decorations are not tested in the same way as toys. You can check current recalls on the GOV.UK product safety alerts page. Our guide are gonks safe for children? explains what to look for.

How to display Halloween gonks

  • Front door welcome: group gonks of different heights with real pumpkins and a lantern. Use only outdoor-rated gonks outside, and bring soft ones in when it rains.
  • Mantelpiece: sit witch gonks along the edge with their legs dangling, with autumn leaves and battery candles. Never put fabric gonks near real candles.
  • Party table: use small gonks as centrepieces or place markers.
  • Window: a light-up gonk in the window is a friendly signal to trick-or-treaters.
